No choice since 2012.
We didn't get a choice in the primary. Sen. Hesselbein's last real primary was in 2012, when she ran for Assembly the first time. No one dares to challenge her, which means our district hasn't had a choice over who represents us. Now we have a choice!
A vote for all of us.
All of us deserve more freedom in our lives, not be controlled by the whims of our bosses, healthcare CEOs, supremacists of all kinds, & governing leaders who don’t represent us in any way. We deserve a choice!
For that freedom, we need 1) rights to organize, 2) a government designed to actually respond to our needs, & 3) a stable foundation of wellbeing in wages, healthcare, housing, safety, & more to live comfortably & thrive.
We stand up for the rights & well-being of all our neighbors. Working families. LGBTQ+ people. Immigrants, whether documented or not. Black & brown Wisconsinites. Asian & Native Wisconsinites. Women. Muslims, Jews, & other religious minorities. People with disabilities. Rural, suburban, & city residents.
Our campaign is for all of us, not for me. Running for office was never my plan. But I’m willing to do the work to advance our values when no one else will.

Ban Corporate Donors. Ditch the Rich.
Money in politics corrupts democracy. It lets the rich choose far more than us. Sen. Hesselbein takes money from corporate PACs & rich donors who like her advocacy for corporate healthcare, banks, energy companies, & other wealthy interests. She's had union support but plays both sides.
I'm for working people, not the rich. Our campaign rejects money from PACs, & I've set a $200 total individual limit on contributions to show that regular folks drive this campaign, not wealthy donors.
We need full public funding for campaigns with no outside spending. That requires federal change to overturn Citizens United, which will happen after we rebalance the Supreme Court with more justices. Here in WI, we must get creative on how to limit money until then.
Progressive vs. Establishment
We differ in our commitment to help people who deserve more wellbeing & fair treatment. It matters what we do, not just what we say. Establishment Democrats say people deserve better but their policies show they don't want to help too much.
I'm also a strong supporter of reproductive freedom & gender-affirming care, an anti-discrimination law protecting transgender people, unshackling labor unions, driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants & bans on 287g agreements, prosecuting ICE, better gun safety, public safety through community investment, environmental protection, & improving wellbeing & equity in pregnancy & post-partem care, among other important issues.
Living our progressive values.
You can trust I'll fight fearlessly for all of us because I've done that my whole life. I feel compelled to use my privilege against gross unfairness.
I met my wife while our labor union was on strike. I pursued ICE agents in Madison as they tried to abduct our neighbors. I helped block the police attack on UW-Madison's Gaza encampment. I publicly condemned my employer for using imprisoned labor when I worked at LSU, drawing news attention. I got a transgender rights message onto a sports broadcast when it was a major point of contention. In college, I raised awareness on sexual assault & consent and organized anti-war protests.
I've advocated for equity in my workplaces for 20 years. My academic research & public comments highlight rampant systemic discrimination against marginalized people. I volunteer at a local food pantry to combat local hunger. And I treat everyone with dignity & respect every day.
Listening to YOU.
This campaign is about you, not me. To learn more about your wants & needs, I'll hold listening sessions at all the public libraries in our district. And you can email me any time.
As your state senator, I promise to continue listening & learning to better serve you.
Nathan, in brief.
Verona dad w/ 2 young kids, middle-class renters, grew up in Appleton
Lifelong activist: union organizing, gendered violence, LGBTQ+, workplace equity, racial justice, human rights, antiwar
Currently active on local immigrant protection & support, local hunger, Gaza protest
UW-Madison political scientist, award-winning for teaching & research
I'll run this campaign in my spare time because I can't afford time off work, & I'm not willing to sacrifice all my family time. My wife & I have worked out a schedule for a handful of hours a week, trading off time so she doesn't get extra childcare. That's atypical for a campaign, but it'll be enough for us to make a big impact, especially with your help!
What we will accomplish
Winning a write-in campaign is a long-shot, even in a very progressive district (Hong beat Crowley here).
But win or lose, our campaign will:
Pressure establishment Democrats to do better or risk losing!
Encourage more progressive challengers!
Show our progressive voting power! More votes = more power.
Loudly & proudly advocate for our progressive values
Give us a real choice - a big win for democracy!
And, if we shock everyone by winning this, I'm fully ready to serve.
Of, by, & for the people.
A healthy democracy has leaders who look like us & have backgrounds & experiences like ours. Working people are vastly underrepresented among leaders at all levels of government. The story is similar for women, LGBTQ+ people, and racial, ethnic, & religious minorities.
I will work hard to recruit more progressives from underrepresented groups to run for office to make our government & our party better. And I will push for public campaign finance, income replacement for candidates, & better legislator pay to help more working people run. End government by the rich!
Vote Crowley & Pocan, then write in Nathan Kalmoe for WI Senate
We absolutely must defeat fascist Republicans AND we need to make Democrats better. With our campaign, we have a unique opportunity to do both!
I voted for Hong in the primary. Her narrow loss to Crowley was tough. We'll get 'em next time. Now, we need to do everything we can to keep Trump insurrectionist Tom Tiffany out of the governor's office.
Vote Crowley for Governor, Pocan for U.S. House, & then write in Nathan Kalmoe to keep pressure on Democrats to do better. Our campaign will help keep all progressives engaged in defeating Republicans while also making more decent Democrats.
Our Senate District,
Wisconsin's 27th!
The 27th district occupies ancestral & contemporary Ho-Chunk land, a place known as Teejop. American settlers failed to drive them out of Wisconsin despite decades of ethnic cleansing. The land was not ours to take, and the harm to Ho-Chunk people was atrocious. Today, we respect the inherent sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Wisconsin's other First Nations, we fight for the rights of Native Wisconsinites, & we recognize our obligation to do all we can to repair irreparable harms.
Fun District Fact! Part of the district boundary runs along the Southwest Bike Path I use to bike-commute from Verona to UW! Fellow nerds: explore the map here!
